The Görög Kancsó Restaurant is located at the bottom of Görög Street, one of the oldest streets in Szentendre, leading from the Main Square to the Dunakorzó (Danube Promenade). The street (and later the restaurant) was named after the Greek population who settled in large numbers in Szentendre at the end of the 17th century, fleeing the Ottoman conquest. The restaurant opened in 1961, when the town began preparing for tourism and hospitality. At that time, the painter Imre Szánthó (1925-1998) was commissioned to create the signboard and the interior decoration. The fresco depicting the cityscape of Szentendre, still visible in the interior today, was created at this time.
